Choosing an expense tracker app in Malaysia
There are three ways to track spending in Malaysia: type every payment yourself, let an app connect to your bank, or have an app read the payment alerts you already get. MyPurrse is the third kind. It reads alerts from apps like MAE, CIMB and Touch 'n Go eWallet and files each payment in a Google Sheet in your own Drive.
Three approaches compared
| Approach | How spending is recorded | Bank login | Where transactions live |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual entry | You type each payment into an app or a template. | No | In that app or template. |
| Bank sync | The app connects to your bank account. | Yes | With that app's company. |
| Alert reading (MyPurrse) | It reads the payment alerts your bank and e-wallet apps already show on your phone. | No. It never connects to a bank and cannot move money. | A monthly Google Sheet in your own Google Drive. The MyPurrse server does not store them. |
What to check before you choose
- Bank login. Does the app need your online banking password? MyPurrse never asks for it.
- E-wallets, not just banks. A lot of everyday spending in Malaysia goes through TNG eWallet, ShopeePay, GrabPay and Boost. A tracker that only sees your bank misses it.
- Transfers between your own accounts. Reloading TNG from Maybank, or paying your credit card bill, is not new spending. It should not be counted twice.
- Instalments. SPayLater, Atome, Grab PayLater, a car loan or PTPTN: only the monthly instalment should count as spending.
- Who holds your data. Can you see and export every transaction? With MyPurrse they are rows in your own Google Sheet.
How MyPurrse handles Malaysian payments
- DuitNow to a person is spending, even though the alert says "transfer". Only money moving between your own accounts and wallets is a transfer.
- Wallet reloads and your own card bill are transfers, so nothing is counted twice.
- Cards are told apart by their last 4 digits, so one bank app can hold a personal and a business card.
- Buy now, pay later and loans go in Budget › Debts & loans. Each month is ticked off when its payment alert comes in, and debts stay on your phone, never on our server.
Pricing in ringgit
- Free: reads alerts from 1 app.
- Pro: RM 6.90 a month. Reads 3 apps, with category budgets and a year of insights.
- Max: RM 12.90 a month. Reads 10 apps, with full history and all four cats.
Paying yearly gets 12 months for the price of 11. Prices are also shown in SGD, PHP and BND.
Questions
Does MyPurrse work with Touch 'n Go eWallet, ShopeePay and GrabPay?
Yes. It reads the payment alerts those apps show, as it does for Maybank MAE, CIMB, RHB, Public Bank and other banks. Any app that posts a payment alert with an amount can be tracked, and bank SMS can be read too.
Will reloading my TNG eWallet count as spending?
No. Reloading a wallet from your own bank account is a transfer, so it stays out of your spending and budget. The money counts as spending when you pay a shop or a person from the wallet.
Does MyPurrse need my bank login?
No. It only reads the payment alerts your bank and e-wallet apps already show on your phone. It never connects to a bank, never asks for your online banking password and cannot move money.
Is MyPurrse on Google Play yet?
Not publicly yet. MyPurrse is in beta on Android, and the Google Play listing opens to everyone in Q4 2026.
Is there an iPhone version?
Not yet. iOS does not let an app read other apps' notifications, so MyPurrse is Android only for now. iPhone is on the roadmap with no date.
